日本語との旅路 

こんにちは！エヴァン・ロフマンです。
Timewitchで短期間インターンとして働いています。日本研究の学生として過ごした私のこれまでの歩みについて、ここで少し話したいと思います。

日本語を学んだ背景

私は2020年の大学1年生のときから、日本語の勉強を始めました。当初は「外国語」の卒業要件単位を満たすために始めたのですが、すぐに日本語に夢中になりました。その複雑な文法、華麗な文字体系、多くの言語的特徴に影響を与える豊かな文化に魅了されました。できる限りたくさんのことを学びたいと思い、可能な限り多くの日本語コースを受講し始めました。私は本来、ボストン大学コミュニケーション学部の映画＆テレビ専攻として入学しましたが、3年生の秋に人文科学部の日本語・日本文学専攻に移りました。その時までに、私は漢字、日本の小説、日本語会話、翻訳などに特化したコースを受講していました。ボストン大学の日本語学科は本当に素晴らしく、授業科目の幅が広いので、さまざまな視点から学ぶことができました。

2022年秋、翌年からの京都への留学を決心しました。それまで国外に出たことは一度もありませんでしたが、自分の殻を破って一歩踏み出すことで、後できっと自分に感謝することになるだろうと確信していました。翌年の秋、日本で4か月間過ごしましたが、その間、私の日本語能力は驚くほどに向上しました。同志社大学の友達と、ほとんど会話ができなかった状態から、日々の会話ができるようになりました。関西地方を旅することで、日本文化のさまざまな側面に触れることができ、とても貴重な経験になりました。アメリカに戻ってきた今、日本が恋しいと思うことはたくさんありますが、特に印象に残っているのは、日本の公共交通機関の素晴らしさです。

アメリカに帰国すると、あらゆる手段で日系アメリカ人の文化にもっと関わりたいと思った私は、ボストン日本協会でボランティア活動を始めました。

最終的に、ディレクターが、ウェブサイト上の「学生向けの機会」を掲載しているページについて教えてくれ、そこでTimewitchのインターンの求人情報を見つけました。最初は、日本の企業で働いた経験がなく、さらには敬語を使うことにも自信がなかったので、応募することを躊躇していましたが、とにかくやってみることにしました。

採用プロセスでお会いした方々は、非常に寛大で理解を示してくださいましたし、特に今私が一緒に働いているスタッフの皆さんには、その寛容さがひときわ感じられます。
以来私は、Timewitchで約2か月にわたり翻訳の仕事をしてきましたが、出会った方々は皆さんとても親切で、歓迎してくださいました。
さらに、インターン生が完全リモートで自分の時間を管理しながら働けるため、私も忙しい学生生活の合間を縫って仕事のスケジュールを立てることができます。
その後、私は学部生活を終え、秋からボストン大学の大学院に進学する予定です。
可能であれば、これからも長くTimewitchで働き続けたいと思っています！

Journeys with the Japanese Language

Hello! My name is Evan Laufman. I have been working as an intern at Timewitch for a short period of time and would love to talk a little about my journey here as a student of Japanese studies.

History Learning Japanese

I began studying Japanese my freshman year of college in 2020. Initially, I began studying it to fulfill a “foreign languages” graduation credit requirement. However, I quickly fell in love with the language. The intricacies of its grammar, the gorgeous writing system, the rich culture that informs many of its linguistic quirks—I became infatuated. I wanted to learn as much as I could, and as such, I began taking as many Japanese language courses as possible. I initially entered Boston University as a Film & Television major in the College of Communications, but in the Fall of my junior year, I switched to a Japanese Language and Literature major in the College of Arts and Sciences. By that time, I had taken courses specializing in the study of kanji, Japanese fiction, conversational Japanese, translation, and more. The Japanese department at Boston University is truly exceptional, and the breadth of courses offered allowed me to study from a variety of perspectives.

In Fall of 2022, I decided to study abroad in Kyoto the following year. I had never been out of the country, but I knew that I would thank myself later for going out of my comfort zone. I spent four months in Japan the following Fall, and in that time, my Japanese linguistic ability took a stunning leap. I went from hardly being able to hold conversations to having them daily with my friends at Doshisha University. Traveling around the Kansai region allowed me to experience so many different aspects of Japanese culture—it was an invaluable experience. There are many things I miss about Japan now that I’m back in the United States, but I must admit that what tops the list is Japan’s public transit system.

Upon my return to America, I knew I wanted to get more involved in Japanese American culture however I could. With that in mind, I began volunteering with the Japan Society of Boston. Eventually, the director told me about a page on their website that houses “opportunities for students,” and there I found the Timewitch intern job posting. I was initially hesitant to apply due to my lack of experience working in a Japanese company, and even worse, my lack of confidence in using 敬語. I applied anyway. Everyone involved in the hiring process was incredibly patient and understanding, and that is doubly true for the Timewitch staff who I work with. I have since been working with Timewitch for about two months doing translation work, and every single individual I have encountered has been so kind and welcoming. Furthermore, the fact that interns work fully remotely and make their own hours means that I’m able to schedule my work around my busy life as a student. I have since finished my undergraduate career and will enter Boston University’s graduate school in the Fall. If possible, I would like to continue working with Timewitch for a long time!
